Obituary for Carlene "Country" Solomon

Carlene “Country” Solomon, 93, died March 9, 2014 at his residence in Starkville, MS. Graveside service will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Friendship Cemetery, 4th Street South, Columbus, MS. Mr. Solomon was born November 19, 1920 and raised in Tishomingo county, MS. He enjoyed sports, but basketball was his favorite. A member of the Tishomingo High School basketball team, he played in State Championship games in 1938 and 1939. He came to Mississippi State University on a basketball scholarship in 1940. He temporarily left MSU to serve in the U. S. Army Air Force during World War II. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to MSU and served as Captain of the 1947 basketball team. At Mississippi State, he lettered in basketball and track, which earned him membership in the M-Club. He received his B. S. degree in Education in 1948. After graduation, Mr. Solomon worked for the MSU Athletic Department, both as a coach and in publicity. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service. Mr. Solomon was a member of First United Methodist Church in Starkville. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Barham Solomon. He is survived by sisters, Tracene Horton of Alabaster, AL, Gearldene Kelly of Midwest City, OK, a brother James Robert Solomon of Belmont, MS, and many nieces and nephews. His outgoing personality and humor will be sincerely missed by those who knew him. Memorials may be made to Starkville First United Methodist Church.
