Obituary for Dr. Ellen Skoog Bryant

Dr. Ellen Skoog  Bryant
Dr. Ellen Skoog Bryant, age 91, passed away at Vickers Personal Care Home on September 30, 2014. Dr. Bryant received her Doctorate from Mississippi State University and was the first Director of the Women’s Studies Program at Mississippi State University. The program, formerly located in the basement of Rice Hall, is named the Ellen Bryant Center for Women’s Studies. Dr. Bryant was retired as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology.

Services are scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. Visitation will be from 12:00 – 2:00 preceding the funeral service at Welch Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville.

Dr. Bryant is survived by two sons, James A. Bryant and his wife, Janis of Starkville, and Gary E. Bryant and his wife, Bettye of Houston, TX; one daughter, Linda Cambre and her husband, John of Starkville; five grandchildren, Lauren Chapman Thompson, Amanda Henry, Jeff Bryant, Glen Bryant, and Monica Bryant; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn D. Bryant; sister, Gertrude K. Skoog; and her parents, August Skoog and Martha Floodman Skoog.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Starkville or the Mississippi State University Foundation, P.O. Box 6149, Mississippi State, MS 39762 with the gift designated to the Gender Studies Program and Ellen Bryant Women’s Resource Center.
