Obituary for George Glenn Cook

George “Glenn” Cook, was born June 20th, 1940 in Port Arthur, TX, and passed away on November 20th, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Margie, his sons, Stephen (and wife Randy Davis) of Gaithersburg, MD and Tim of Nashville, TN, his brother, David of Clarksdale, his grandchildren, Allyson, Jennifer, Jamie, and Casey and his great grandson, Landon. He is preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and Claribel, and his son, Gary.

As a graduate in Landscape Architecture, Glenn received his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University, where he was a member of the ROTC. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1964-1966 as Platoon Leader and Battalion Adjutant in Okinawa, Japan. He left active duty as a Captain and served in the Reserves as Company Commander until 1971.

He began his career in Landscape Architecture as an Associate in San Antonio, Texas with Stewart E. King & Associates in 1966. He began teaching Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State University in 1978 while obtaining his Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Mississippi. He retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2009.

Glenn was active in both professional and civic organizations. With the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), he served as Presidents of the Southwest Chapter and Mississippi Chapter from 1995-96. Glenn was inducted into the Council of Fellows in 1997. Some of creative works and accomplishments include the Master Plan for the Alamo, The Spanish Governor’s Palace, site development plans for several Missions in San Antonio, TX, Ministry of Finance Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Johnson City. Glenn also.had ongoing leadership roles with the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis International, MSU Faculty Golf League, and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Starkville, Mississippi.

Most Importantly to Glenn and his survivors, his greater accomplishments are the positive impacts he made in the lives of family, countless friends, colleagues and students. He enjoyed the simpler things in life like golf, the great outdoors. He really knew how to live and enjoyed life. Glenn was 74.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, December 1, 2014 from noon 1:30 p.m. at The Episcopal The Church of The Resurrection in Starkville, MS, with a memorial service immediately following.
