Jack Parker Vaughan, 78, died Friday at his home in Starkville. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 15 at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m.

A native of Ponchatoula, La., he was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. In the late 1950s he was recruited as a quarterback for the MSU football team and was a stand-out shortstop for the MSU baseball team.
He served as an official for the National Football League (NFL) for 25 years and officiated more than 465 pro-football games, twenty play-off games, two Pro Bowls and Super Bowls XX, XXV, and XXIX. Prior to joining the NFL he was an official with the Southeastern Conference.

He was 2014 president of the MSU Athletic Council and a member of the MSU Bulldog and Dug-out Clubs. He has served Conference USA as a replay official since retiring from the NFL.

Vaughan has been nominated for induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

He was a retired insurance and real estate broker and operated a bottling company in Louisiana.

Survivors include a son, Scott Vaughan, and daughter, Elizabeth Vaughan, both of Ponchatoula, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, John Vaughan and Jack Parker Vaughan, Jr. and parents Myra and J. S. Vaughan of Ponchatoula.
