Obituary for Henry Cox Pilkinton III

Henry Cox Pilkinton III, age 85, died at home with his sons by his side on February 25 after a brief battle with cancer.

Henry was born in 1929 in Artesia, Mississippi to the late Janie Brewer and Henry C. Pilkinton, Jr.; he lived in Starkville all of his life. Henry was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He worked as a farmer in the Lowndes County community of Artesia until 1960 when he and his partner founded Prairie Distributing Company which later became Better Brands Distributing Company. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Starkville, and he actively served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.

Survivors include his sons Henry C. Pilkinton IV (Sandra) of Columbus, MS; Charles Buck Pilkinton of Mayhew, sister Lib Fields Sistrunk of Jackson, grandchildren HC and Paige Pilkinton and four nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Barbara Burgin Pilkinton, and both parents.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 27 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, with burial following at Oddfellows cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 27 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Barbara Burgin Pilkinton Endowed Scholarship, c/o Mississippi State University, 100 Hunter Henry Blvd. Mississippi State, Mississippi 39762.
