Obituary for Helen Gray "Baw Baw" Morgan

Helen Gray "Baw Baw" Morgan

Helen Gray Morgan, "Baw Baw" passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at home surrounded by the daughters she loved. Helen was born June 9, 1932 in Hoot Owl, Arkansas to Ed and Azalee Gray, and remained a country girl at heart.

Helen married the LOVE of her life, Bob Morgan on June 5, 1954 in Hernando, Mississippi and settled in Memphis, Tennessee. From that day forward they were never apart. Together they raised 3 daughters, Rhonda Morgan Smith and husband Randy of Alvin, Lisa Morgan Pitts and husband Gary of Friendswood, and Janet Morgan Melnar and husband Rodney of Bellville.

She was proud to be "BawBaw" to her 8 grandsons, Keith Smith and wife Tina of West Columbia, Brent Smith of Angleton, Brandon Smith of Angleton, Beau Pitts of Tiki Island, Jared Pitts and wife Jessica of Friendswood, Morgan Pitts of Fort Worth, Steffan Melnar of Denton, and Garrett Ancil Melnar of Bellville. "Baw Baw's" other delights in life were her 5 great-grandchildren; Megan Smith, Jacob Smith, Mya Smith, Bobbie Smith and Carson Smith.

After graduation from high school in 1950, Helen moved to Louisville, Mississippi, where she went to work as a medical office manager.
Helen met Bob when he was home on leave from the Air Force in 1953. They were devoted to each other for 60 years.
The Air Force moved Bob and Helen to Pasadena in 1955. Helen worked at Pasadena General Hospital until the family moved to Alvin, their life long home in 1967. Helen worked for Alvin Community Hospital as the Business Office Manager for 18 years until she and Bob retired in 1984.
During their retirement Bob and Helen enjoyed fishing and spending time at their cabin in Colmesniel. Mom and Dad made trips to Mountain View, Arkansas twice a year to meet family and friends from across the U.S. for lots of good times.
Around home, they were well known for their "Mercy Missions", Mom would cook and both she and Dad would deliver the meals to those in need.
Our immediate family, as well as so many others, were blessed to have Mom as the "cure what ails ya" cook of Chicken and Dumplings, Old Man's Cake, Helen's Famous Chocolate pie, and so many other delicious treats because "Nobody cooks like Moma!"

Helen was a wonderful example of Christ's Love, choosing not to judge, but to listen. Mom was a great listener. Her famous quote was "Everybody wants to
talk but nobody wants to listen." She became a compassionate counselor, blessed with wisdom and a way with words that encouraged and comforted so many. Mom was a Sunday School teacher, devoted Deacon's wife, great neighbor, loyal friend, loving daughter, devoted sister, daughter-in-law, a precious and treasured mother-in-law and devoted Christian.
Her true calling was always to be a loving wife and the BEST MOMA to us girls and our "Baw Baw" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom and Dad's greatest joy was ALWAYS being with their family, enjoying good food, good fishing, noisy laughter and each other. Baw Baw's lap was always the place for a verse or ten of "Bayou Baby", her kitchen full of warmth and hearty meals and their home full of Love for family, each other and their Heavenly Father. Mom and Dad set aside a special time each day for their daily Bible readings and prayer.

Helen was joyously reunited in Heaven with our Daddy-Bob Morgan. There was no place that Mom and Dad would rather be than at home with each other and now and forever, they are together again.
The rest of her Heavenly welcoming committee includes her parents-Ed and Azalee Gray, her brother J.V. Gray, sisters, Nell Carter and Margaret Ann Tiner, George and Jimmie Morgan, Eddie Barton, Mary Helen Beall, Jim Tom Jackson, and a host of so many other family members and friends.

Graveside services will be at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Friday-May 8th at 10:00 a.m. Sturgis, Mississippi.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Morgan Chapel Baptist Church, 4950 Morgantown Road, Sturgis, Mississippi. 39769
