Obituary for Mary McCabe Winston

Mary McCabe Winston

(May 23, 1926-June 1, 2015)

Mary was born May 24, 1926 in Montrose, South Dakota the daughter of Joseph Henry and Bernice McCabe. Her family moved to Walla Walla Washington in 1941 and she graduated from Walla Walla High school in 1944 with her identical twin sister Marlyn. They both joined the Cadet Nursing Corps at St. Mary's Nursing School in Walla Walla.

On September 15, 1946 she married Ike Winston and moved to Starkville, Mississippi where she became a devoted mother to five sons. She returned to nursing at Felix Long Hospital. As the children got older she returned to nursing school and received her LPN license in 1970 and later in 1975 graduated from Mississippi University for Women School of Nursing and became a RN. She later received her bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Mississippi State University in 1978. She authored and coordinated a refresher Orientation course for RN's who plan to return to work after having been out of the clinical field. She worked for Oktibbeha County Hospital for many years and retired after 27 years in the nursing field. She retired as 11-7 nursing supervisor. After retirement she continued a lifelong love of sewing, fishing, craft work and cooking.

She is survived by her five sons, Bill Winston, Bobby (Frankie) Winston, Kenny (Mary Jo) Winston, Patrick (Andrea) Winston and Dennis (Kathy) Winston, 16 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Bill McCabe of Moscow, ID, and one sister, Elaine Spencer of Clarkston, WA.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ike, sisters Marlyn Arland and Patty Karkow.

Special thanks to Marla Everson, Teresa Bush, Debbie Hendrix, Rose Evans and Gentiva nurses Latoya Guyton, Bonnie Mason and Patricia Skinner for home care and hospice.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 9-11 a.m at Welch Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at Memorial Garden Park at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers donation may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Pallbearers are: Wayne Carpenter, Jason King, Isaac Winston, Russel Winston, Mike Winston and Sam Wilks.
