Obituary for Dorphia Sue Garrison

Dorphia Sue Garrison
Mrs. Dorphia Sue Garrison, age 93, passed away at the Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Shreveport, Louisiana on June 3, 2015. Born March 1, 1922 in Philadelphia, MS., Sue met her future husband Ed Garrison in Noxapater, MS. After their marriage in 1940, Sue followed her young Army officer husband to the west coast for training prior to Ed shipping out to war in the South Pacific. Sue returned to her parent’s home near Noxapater awaiting her husband’s return from war. Sue, Ed and two young daughters moved to Starkville, MS in 1951. They enjoyed 45 years together in Starkville and at MSU. True State fans they enjoyed season baseball tickets for many years. Sue and Ed were faithful Methodist and raised their three daughters in the First United Methodist Church. They both fulfilled various roles in the church. Sue devotedly served as the church secretary for many years.

Sue Garrison was a loving wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed her friends and cherished so many friendships over her lifetime. Her life was full of service to others. Even though she enjoyed the “beautiful things” in life, she was often seen with her fishing gear in hand meeting Kitty Young at the pond. She happily looked forward to their annual fishing trips!

Sue and Ed raised their three daughters in Starkville guiding and giving them opportunities to grow and learn. Together they served as role models. Teaching them generosity, honesty, service to others, giving a helping hand, cooking and sewing. They always supported, and kept a careful eye over their daughter’s schoolwork. The church was the center of family activities.

Mrs. Garrison was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Ethel Kilgore and Susan Alford Kilgore, her husband of 57 years, Col. Everette Wesley Garrison, and her two sisters, Mrs. Earl Ferguson (Ruth) and Mrs. Julian Burrage (Virgie).

She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters and their spouses Mrs. Tom Daughtry, (Suzanne) of Cumming GA, Mrs. Mike Vance (Connie) of Pensacola, FL and Ms. Jeannie Garrison of Shreveport, LA.
Lovingly called Mamma Sue by her seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Clayt Mason (Suzy Cullison), Mrs. Lance Pruitt (Mary Cullison), Dr. James Cullison (Wendy), Mrs. Chris Swan (Suzanne Greenman), Mrs. David Talbert (Julie Anna Ballew), Mr. Wesley Ballew, and Mr. Dustin Ballew (Julie). Great-grand children Cullison Mason, Mrs. Steven Morris (Nikkilee), Ms. Shelby Mason, Carson Pruitt, Riley Pruitt, James Foster Cullison, Waverly Cullison, Lily and Mary Craig, Isaac Balew, Rhett Ballew, Madeline Ballew, Addison Ballew, Cohen Ballew and great-great granddaughter Frankie May.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2015 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS, with the funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery in Starkville. Rev. Bob Whiteside and Dr. Prentiss Gordon will conduct the service.
