Lou Griswold  Toler

Lou Griswold Toler passed away at Montgomery Gardens Assisted Living on August 24, 2015 at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer. She was a beloved mother, aunt, friend, and “Mammy” to many who loved her.
Ms. Toler was born on October 1, 1933 in Selma, North Carolina to Raymond and Blanche Griswold. She graduated from Selma High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from the Wilson School of Nursing in Wilson, North Carolina. She married Loomis Toler on October 16, 1954 and they made their home in Wilson. From there they moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana before making their home in Starkville in 1962. Lou worked as a hospital nurse in Wilson at Woodard-Herring Hospital and in Baton Rouge at Baton Rouge General Hospital. Upon moving to Starkville, Lou became director of nurses at Felix Long Hospital until the birth of her only child, Sandy. After staying at home for several years to raise her daughter she became the school nurse for the Starkville Public Schools where she worked for 19 years until her retirement.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ms. Toler is preceded in death by her sisters Annie Taylor and Dean Hatcher, and her brothers Willie Griswold and S.P. Griswold.

Ms. Toler is survived by her daughter Sandy Maynard and her husband Scott of Starkville, Mississippi and two grandsons (who were her pride and joy) Brad Maynard of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Lewis Maynard of Starkville, Mississippi. She is also survived by several relatives in North Carolina. Susan McIntyre of Dallas, Texas and Amy Barker Carpenter of Cookeville, Tennessee were always like daughters to Lou and held a special place in her heart.

Ms. Toler enjoyed traveling, playing golf and spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed watching her grandsons play sports while they were growing up.

The visitation will be held at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville on Friday, August 28th from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, in Starkville on Saturday, August 29th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will also be at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens in Starkville.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church 820 Evergreen Street, Starkville, MS 39759.
