Obituary for Edward "Cookie" Epperson

Edward "Cookie" Epperson
Edward “Cookie” Epperson passed away at his home in Starkville, MS, on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at the age of 90. He was born at Kings Daughters Hospital in Greenville, MS, on August 29, 1925, to George W. and Jesse Cooke Epperson. He graduated from Greenville High School in June 1943 and joined the Army Air Corp that summer. In 1948, he graduated from Mississippi State College, where he was manager of the MSU football team for four years and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. From 1949-1952, he was in the Naval Reserve Unit in Greenville, MS.
Cookie married Marilyn Kent on May 6, 1950, and then moved to Chicago, IL, to open a distribution center for KAM Dog food made by National Packing Company in Greenville, MS, owned by The Kent Company, where he was employed. Six months later they moved to San Antonio, TX, to introduce KAM and Butch dog food to the area.
In 1951, The Kent Company purchased a 10,000 acre cattle ranch—part in Noxubee County and part in Lowndes County—where Cookie became manager of the undertaking. In the fall of1964, the ranch was sold, and he moved his family back to Greenville, MS. He became a stock broker for Goodbody and Company and later Hayden Stone.
In the summer of 1970, he went into partnership with Jim Tubbs and bought a Chevrolet dealership in Amory, MS. He bought the business in 1973, and had it until he retired in 1990.
Cookie and Marilyn moved to Starkville, MS, in November 1991 to be with their daughter and her family and go to Mississippi State University athletic events.
While in Amory he served as President of Amory Chamber of Commerce; served 8 years on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Board and was active in the First United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Finance Committee for many years.
Cookie worked for Deposit Guaranty Bank in Starkville, MS, as their representative with car dealerships throughout northeast Mississippi from 1993-1997. Later, he was employed by Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, MS, as a marshal from 1997-2001. He also worked at MSU Golf Course as part time marshal. He loved to fish, hunt and play golf.
Cookie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Starkville, MS, daughter, Marcia “Candy” Epperson Broyles (Bill) of Starkville, MS, son Allan Cooke Epperson of New Orleans, LA, and granddaughters Meredith Epperson Broyles of Gulf Shores, AL, and Kathryn Amelia Broyles of Washington, DC.
Visitation will be in the Starkville First United Methodist Church sanctuary on Monday, January 18, 2016, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Graveside service will follow the funeral service at Memorial Gardens Park, Starkville, MS.
