Obituary for William Lamar "Bill" Polk, Jr.

William Lamar  "Bill" Polk, Jr.
Services will be held for William Lamar "Bill" Polk, Jr., on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Starkville, Mississippi. Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2016 and one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Memorial Garden Park Cemetery. Bill died on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Bill was born November 24, 1938 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, weighing 1 1/2 pounds. He was the son of William Lamar Polk and Evelyn Walker Polk. He was raised in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated from Central High School. He received a BS degree in business from Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation, he began working in the insurance industry for Traveler's Insurance Company and then Hartford Insurance Company. He finally fulfilled his dream of returning to Starkville and owning his own insurance agency when he purchased Reynolds Insurance Agency. In Starkville, he participated in numerous civic activities, including membership in Kiwanis Club where he served as President and Lt. Governor. He also served on the Advisory Board of NBC Bank. He served on the board of District 5 Volunteer Fire Department. After retirement from the insurance business, Bill taught insurance at Mississippi State University, where he was much loved by his students. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Savage Sunday School Class.

He leaves his wife, Frances Page Polk; two sons, William Lamar Polk, III and Michael Page Polk (Michelle); one daughter, Laura Polk Cooley (Chad); and three grandchildren, William Summerford "Ford" Polk, Grace Elizabeth Cooley, and William Teague Cooley. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Polk Kirby and Gwen Polk Rogers, and several nieces and nephews.

The family asks that memorials be made to Wounded Warriors, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.
