Obituary for Alice Janet Milam Handy

Alice Janet Milam Handy
Alice Janet Milam Handy, 89, entered into Heavenly rest Saturday, February 6, 2016 after a brief illness.

Jan was born in Dodson, Louisiana on November 15, 1926 to the late Ott G. Milam and Effie White Milam. She grew up in Tullos, Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana Tech. In 1946 she taught at Ocean Springs High School and at a football game met the love of her life – Tom Handy.

Jan is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Tom Hughes Handy.

She is survived by her daughter, Dana Handy Sharbrough and husband William C. Sharbrough III of Charleston, SC and her son Kim Douglas Handy and his wife Deborah A. Dyer Handy from Philadelphia, TN; Her three grandchildren, Matthew Sharbrough and his wife Deborah of Gulfport, MS, Geoffrey Sharbrough and his wife Kelly and great granddaughter Natalie of Charleston, SC and granddaughter Dr. Kathryn Sharbrough of Starkville, MS.

Jan was a wonderful, caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was always more concerned about what she could do for you or help you do than about herself. When her children were older, she worked in the Dean’s office of the School of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State University. She was responsible for making certain every A&S student had the courses they needed to graduate. She retired and spent the remaining years traveling with Dad, gardening. She also served as head of the alter guild for the Church of the Resurrection and loved singing in the choir. What she enjoyed most was being MeMom to her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Resurrection in Starkville MS on Thursday, February 11 at 10:00 a.m. Family will receive visitors at the church from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. just before the service. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Ocean Springs, MS on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Whenever anyone would leave, she would always say “A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” We say the same to you, Mom.
