Obituary for Fred McMurry

FRED MCMURRY


On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, Fred McMurry of Mathiston and Starkville, passed to his heavenly home at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. Fred was born in West Point, MS on February 9, 1944 to Mary Dean and David Edward McMurry. Fred graduated from West Point High School and entered the Navy to serve his country. He served as a machinist mate.

After his naval service, Fred was a clerk and later a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. Fred loved spending time with family and friends. He loved the outdoors, gospel music and in his earlier days, working on vehicles.

Fred was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, attending many meetings as a representative. He was also a member of the USS Lofberg Association, serving two terms as secretary, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and also a member of Tin Can Sailors.

The Celebration of Life will be held at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with the Bro. Jason Middleton conducting the service. Visitation will be Friday, March 18, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery in Starkville.

Fred is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanette Hankins McMurry of Mathiston, MS; daughter, Valerie Turner (Rob) of Mathiston, MS; grandchildren, Mary Mae Turner, Samuel Turner, and Amberly Turner, all of Mathiston, MS; brother, John McMurray (Dartha) of Starkville, MS; sisters, Betty McMurry McCoy of West Point, MS, Jewell McMurry Cartwright of Tupelo, MS, and Shelia McMurry Ashton of Hendersonville, TN; and sister-in-law, Jean Wallis of Starkville, MS; and one aunt, Evelyn Miller of West Point, MS. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David William McMurray of Starkville, MS.

Pallbearers will be Jason McCoy, John McMurray, Jr., Wayne Griffin, R B Davis, and Jimmy Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meadowview Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 Linden Circle, Starkville, MS 39759 or your favorite charity.
