Obituary for SSGT Edward Lee Smith

SSGT Edward Lee  Smith
SSGT Edward Lee Smith, 66 of Maben, MS, died March 27, 2016 at his residence.

Born June 17, 1949 in Aberdeen, MS, he was the son of the late Hollis Alton and Earlene (Kimbell) Smith. He married his wife now of 14 years, Judith Walker Smith in June of 2002 in Mathiston, MS.

He graduated high school from Central High in West Helena, Arkansas, May of 1968. In April 1969 he completed basic training-Tech school in Austin, Texas, before entering his eight years career in the military in the United States Air Force as a Jet Air Craft Mechanic at Howard Air Force Base in the Canal Zone, Panama, Thailand and other bases in the U.S., before returning back to Mississippi where he finally settled and raised his children. He retired from Chickasaw Equipment as a Mechanic in 2011.

He was saved and baptized at Forth St. Missionary Baptist Church in West Helena, Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Smith; sons, Frank J. Smith of Cumberland, MS, Edward Lee Smith, Jr. of Maben, MS; daughters, Dayra Itzela Botzau of Sheboygan, WI, Vianka Ivette Baxter (James) of Eupora, MS, and Patricia Sue Hudson (Patrick) of Houston, MS; step children, Jonathon Upchurch of Starkville, MS, Rebecca Maria Bishop (Andy) of MS, Sheila Knapp (Paul) of Hurley, MS, Tommy Peeples (Heather) of Tupelo, MS, Athena Peeples of West Point, MS and Jamie Peeples of Tupelo, MS; 31 grandchildren and six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers, Hollis Smith of Maben, MS and Charles Smith (Wanda) of Murfreesboro, AR; and sister, Patricia Riley (Marion) of Murfreesboro, AR. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Abilio Abel Smith of Milwaukee, WI and by sisters, Margaret Oswalt of West Helena, AR, Mary Sue Fulgham of Maben, MS, and Bonnie Lynn Griffin of Murfreesboro, AR.

His passion was hunting with his kids and grandkids. He was a jack of all trades and could build most anything. His heart was big and he loved everyone who crossed his path.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 29, 2016 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS, with the service immediately following in the funeral home chapel. Rev Hal Selby will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Pheba Cemetery in Pheba, MS.
