Obituary for Wendell Watts Gibson

Wendell Watts Gibson, 83, passed away on January 18, 2017 at his residence in Starkville, MS. He graduated from high school in 1962 from Damascus High School, and then attended East Mississippi Community College for two years, before he entered the U.S. Army. He retired from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, where he was employed for 25 years, charter member and past president of the Starkville Shrine Club, past master of Abert Lodge, member of VFW, eight years on the Starkville Board of Alderman and 16 years on the board for the Starkville Parks and Recreation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Salvage Bible Class.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Viva Gibson; and a sister, Jimmie Hopper; and aunt, Gee Gee Gibson.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue Johnson Gibson of Starkville, MS; daughter, Wendy Gibson Jolly and husband Michael of Starkville, MS; sister, Carolyn Griffin of Plantersville, MS; brothers, Norman Gibson Kosciusko, MS, Mark Gibson of Dekalb, MS, and Jerry Gibson of Madison, MS; grandchildren, Sarah Peake, Christina Thompson, Aron Brown, and Shelby Huddleston; and great grandchildren, Riley Thompson, Jake Peake, Trent Peake, and Brantley Peake.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 20, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS, with the funeral service immediately following in the church sanctuary. Dr. Giles Linley, Dr. Prentiss Gordon, and Rev. Stacy Parvin will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery in Starkville.

Memorial donations may be made to Palmer Home for Children, Columbus, MS and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
