Obituary for Eloise Wolfe Kean

Eloise Wolfe Kean
Eloise Wolfe Kean, 96, passed away peacefully at Manhattan Nursing Home in Jackson on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Born in Cascilla, Mississippi, Eloise was a resident of Starkville for most of her life. She married Jack Curry Kean on December 24, 1941, accelerating the date of their wedding after learning of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. During the war, she lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado while Jack served overseas. The couple returned to Mississippi following the war, eventually settling in the Sessums community, where they owned and operated a dairy farm.

Eloise was a talented homemaker and made her home a welcoming place for family and friends. She was legendary for her cooking skills and loved to have a full table. She truly prepared “farm to table” foods that she had grown and preserved in the large garden she had each summer. She made beautiful clothes for her daughters and lovely pieces of handwork that are treasures to her children. She loved young people and welcomed many of her daughters’ MUW classmates into her home during week-ends away from school.

It was not unusual to find her with a hair dryer, brushing a cow to prepare it for a 4-H show with her son, Steve. She was a supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s football, basketball, softball, band, choir, dance and piano endeavors. An avid Mississippi State fan, she loved attending MSU football and basketball games, as well as watching them on TV. In later years, she loved telling other nursing home residents, staff and visitors that “I’m a Dawg”.

Eloise was a devout Christian and long time member of First Baptist Church in Starkville. She had a lovely voice and sang in the choir for many years. Even though she had memory problems in her later years, she never forgot the words to her favorite hymns. She rocked many a baby to “Bringing in the Sheaves.” She found much joy in caring for others.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years. She is survived by her four children: Jack Curry Kean, III (Lois) of Pelham, AL; Rebecca Kean Starling (Tom), of Jackson, MS; Susan Kean Ard (Mike), of Louisville, MS; and Steven Thomas Kean (Elizabeth), of Brandon, MS. She was “Granny” to 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Being a mother and grandmother was her greatest joy.

Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 28 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville; with funeral services to follow at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be a Memorial Garden Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to French Camp Academy or to a favorite charity.
