Obituary for Julia Willetta Braddock Swoope

Julia Willetta Braddock  Swoope
Julia Willetta (Braddock) Swoope, age 81, passed away on March 18, 2017 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Willetta was a retired teacher with the Starkville Public Schools. She was class Valedictorian at Falkner High School in 1953 and editor of the Year Book. She received her B.S. degree from MSCW in 1956 and M.Ed. from Mississippi State University in 1962. In 1956 she was the Assistant Home Economist in Attala County. Before her retirement she taught Home Economics in McAdams, Kosciusko, and Starkville schools. In 1991 she was selected as the Outstanding Teacher at Armstrong Middle School. In 1985 she was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a Professional Fraternity for Industrial Educators, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and a member of the Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi. Willetta was Elder Clerk of Session Moderator of Presbyterian Women of St. Andrew Presbytery. While moderator she hosted Mississippi, Alabama Presbyterian Council W omen gatherings at our Church First Presbyterian Church (USA). She was a Braille worker and a charter member of My Lady Garden Club where she also served as president several times. Willetta loved to play Bridge (duplicate) and was a member of several clubs. She was also known to help with the cattle operations.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 22 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. in the Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ripley, Mississippi. Services will be conducted by Reverend Bill Connolly and Dr. Freddie Rasberry.

Willetta was survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. William M. (Bill) Swoope of Starkville; Son, Alan Swoope and his wife, (Alexess) of Yazoo City; sisters, Linda Jo and Jim Smith and Ann & Hollis Wigington; sister in law, Connie Freeman Braddock; grandchildren, Hannah Swoope Nichols and her husband, Justin, Alex Swoope, Resa Swoope, and Kendall Swoope. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Vance Braddock and Leone Horton Braddock; brother, Danny Horton Braddock.
