Monzelle Alma Hicks Shook 1922-2018

On Tuesday, February 6th, 2018, Monzelle Alma Hicks Shook passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home where she has joined the Lord.
Born August 4, 1922 in Spring City, Tennessee to Queen Elizabeth Hill Hicks and William LaFayette Hicks, Monzelle was the youngest of four daughters raised in Spring City. Monzelle met Harold Shook when he came to Spring City to work for the WPA. Monzelle and Harold married in Spring City, and remained in Tennessee until after the birth of their daughter Elizabeth Ann (Lybbe), after which they moved to the family farm here in Starkville. Monzelle was an excellent cook and hairdresser, who ran her own hair salon. Monzelle’s door was always open with good food on the table, she enjoyed cooking for her family. Monzelle was a member of First Baptist Church here in Starkville, and attended bible study at First Baptist.

Welcoming Monzelle home to the Lord are those who have preceded her in death; husband Harold Kenneth Shook, her parents Queen Elizabeth (Hill) and William LaFayette Hicks, her son-in-law Robert Wesley Massey, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian Mae Hicks Winsett and Elvin Winsett; Dortha Ruth Hicks Knight and Mark Knight; Clara Ann Hicks Siegel and John Siegle.

Monzelle was a devoted mother to her daughter Lybbe Massey of Starkville, Mississippi. Monzelle is survived by her daughter Lybbe and Lybbe’s family. Her legacy as “Meme” to her grandchildren is carried on by her two grandsons and their spouses, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
William Kenneth (Kenny) and Tammy Massey of LeClaire, Iowa and their family-daughter, Elizabeth Shill Massey and sons William Joseph and Jameson Pierce of LeClaire, Iowa; son, William Brittain Massey of Maui, Hawaii; and daughter, Kristine Bishop Massey Martinez and Christopher Allen Martinez and sons Christopher Kenneth and Michael Roccanova of Chicago, Illinois.
Robert Michael (Mike) Massey and Cori Leigh Massey and their children- Carson James Massey, Anna Morgan Massey, Sydney Neil Leer, Kennedy Leigh Leer and Aidan Stephan Leer all of Boerne, Texas.

A celebration of life will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Starkville, Mississippi at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2018. The ceremony will be officiated by Rev. Clifton Curtis. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. A graveside service for the immediate family will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, University Drive, Starkville, Mississippi.
