Obituary for Mary Ann Fleetwood

Mary Ann Fleetwood
Mary Ann Fleetwood passed away April 17, 2018 at the age of 94 years, surrounded by her family at Carrington Nursing Home.

She was born to a prominent Newfoundland family, the second child born to Beatrice and Ethelred Carter of Greenspond, Newfoundland, Canada. She grew up in her beloved country of Canada. She was the "salt of the earth", a true Newfoundlander. There she met and married her American GI, the love of her life, while he was stationed and awaiting his deployment in World War II. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her four children. She lived a brave military life through Robert's Army/Airforce career. On his retirement, they moved the family back to Newfoundland and owned a mink ranch for years. After a second retirement, they packed up and returned to the United States and travelled for a year before settling in Daytona, Florida. There they started a new adventure of running a beach wagon on Daytona Beach. Their final move brought them to Columbus, Mississippi and later Starkville. Mary was happy wherever she was. She deeply loved her family and had a smile that would light up a room. She was smiling and brave to the end and always up to undertaking a new adventure. She is now off to her greatest adventure ever with her Savior leading the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert; her brother, Walter Carter, who was a former Minister of Fisheries for the providence of Newfoundland; her sister, Kay Cutrara of Don Mills, Ontario Canada; and her oldest brother, Allister Carter, who gave his life in World War II.

She was the proud grandparent of nine grandchildren, Robert, Chris, Carter, Robbie, Gina, Julie, Chris K., Lisa, and William, Jr.; and six great grandchildren, Evan, Kiley, Brenna, Bailey, Matthew, and Madison. She is also survived by her four daughters, Peggy Gosse (Lloyd) of Whitbourne Newfoundland, Brenda Trysinkski (Joseph) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Betty Corcoran (Mike) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Barbara Fleetwood (Douglas McClelland) of Starkville; brother, Dr. Allister Carter of New Brunswick, Canada; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2018 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS. There will be a private family graveside service at Memorial Garden Park Cemetery on Saturday morning, April 21, 2018. Rev. Bert Montgomery will conduct the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P. O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703.
