Obituary for David Wayne Putt

David Wayne Putt

David was born on September 22, 1948 and passed peacefully at home from complications of chronic illnesses on September 30, 2023. He was simply and lovingly known as “Putt” to those who knew him well.

He honed his skills as a master mechanic at Cole's Auto Shop and then worked for the City of Starkville until he retired after more than 20 years as the maintenance supervisor of the city barn. Putt was the original MacGyver. An expert with his hands, he could fix or weld anything; if repair wasn’t possible, he would build it from scratch. If all else failed, duct tape and little bit of love would always get things working again.

Unbeknownst to many, he was an avid reader and a talented artist who drew endlessly. He enjoyed travelling and always mentioned Costa Rica, South Dakota, Colorado, local bike rallies and summers spent at the Sewanee River in Florida as some of his favorite adventures. A passionate outdoorsman, Putt loved hunting, fishing, riding back roads at the camp, cooking for the masses and nights spent sharing stories (and a bit of bourbon) around the fire with friends. He was the kindest of souls and always ready to give a helping hand to anyone in need. Most of all, he was a proud father to Chad and Josh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Mary Putt; his sister, Teressa Putt Yeatman, and his brother Bill Putt. He is survived by his sons Chad Putt (Parker, grandson) and Josh Putt, Paul Putt (brother), and the Boring family (Gregg, Ethel, Jenky and Deb), who always considered him one of their own. He also left behind his two beloved dogs, BG and Sophie.

His favorite places were Lake Martin and the Indian Mound Hunting Club, both in Alabama. As he wished, his ashes will be laid to rest during a private family ceremony at the hunting camp when the grasses grow green on the deer fields. Please join us in a celebration of life on October 27, 2023, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS.
