Donovan was born December 25, 1933, in Witt Springs, Arkansas, the only child of Helen Cash Horn and Bige Horn. He graduated from St. Joe High School in St. Joe, Arkansas.

Donovan earned a full basketball scholarship to Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas. He was the point guard for Arkansas Tech basketball teams that posted an overall record of 106-14 from 1951 – 1955. During Donovan’s career at Arkansas Tech, the “Wonder Boys” reached four NAIA National Tournament appearances and in 1954 & 1955, they reached the national semi-finals. He was named All-AIC in 1953, 1954 & 1955, and was chosen as an NAIA All American his senior year.

After graduating from Arkansas Tech, Donovan became a successful high school basketball coach, winning 2 Arkansas State Championship titles at Waldo High School. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1969 in Kansas City, MO, and Arkansas Tech University’s Hall of Distinction in 2007.

In 1973, he was made a full professor and department chair. From 1975 – 1987, he served as Mississippi State University’s faculty athletic representative to the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA.

Donovan was affectionately known to his family and many friends as “Doc.” Doc retired from Mississippi State University in 1995. His love for the outdoors was immeasurable, and he passed that down to his family by sharing experiences on the Buffalo River in St. Joe, Arkansas.

Donovan is survived by his wife, Marlene Edwards Horn, of Starkville, MS, and two daughters, Vicki Wolfe (John) of Calera, AL, and Susan Cox (Faris) of Golden, CO. Doc had seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren who loved him dearly.

According to Doc’s wishes, his family plans a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 Main St, Tupelo, MS 38801. The family is thankful for the care Donovan and his family received from the staff there.
