Obituary for Laurin MacLennan Scales

Laurin MacLennan Scales, age 78, better known as “Coach, Spook or Larry” passed away on October 20, 2018 in the Choctaw Regional Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ackerman, MS. Larry was born on October 7, 1940 in Andalusia, AL and 1941 moved to Kosciusko and later to Starkville, MS. Larry attended the Starkville Schools and graduated from Starkville High School in 1959. He then entered the Naval Reserve and served for two years and later spent 25 years in the National Guard. Larry then went to and graduated from Mississippi State University in 1965 and received a Master’s degree in Education in 1968. Larry taught school in Belle Grade, Florida for 5 years. In 1968 he married Catherine L. Hawkins. He then taught 1 year in Starkville and 29 years in Pascagoula, MS. After retiring in 2008 they moved to Ackerman, MS.

Services are scheduled for Monday, October 22, 2018 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS. Visitation for Larry will be from 12-2 p.m. with the funeral service to immediately follow. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville.

Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine L. Scales; daughters, Mary Catherine Parish, husband Mike of Ackerman, MS and Joanna Marie Brockhoff, husband Joey of Slidell, LA; sisters, Bonnibel Byars, Olive Celeste Woods, and Mary Ann Reese; grandchildren, Alexandria “Alex” Parish, Andrew “Drew” Parish, William “Will” Brockhoff, and Ty Brockhoff; and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Webb (Coach Juicy) Scales and Mary Olive (Spec) Scales, and brother, John Sidney Scales.
