Obituary for Marilyn Ruth Burney Thompson

Marilyn Ruth Burney Thompson of Starkville passed away peacefully at her home in Starkville on October 14, 2018. She was 90 years of age.
Marilyn was born June 20, 1928 in Crystal Springs, MS to Velma McCoy Burney and Ben Ike Burney. She completed her Associate’s Degree at Co-Lin Junior College before marrying Warren Thompson. After college, she began her career with the Baptist Women’s Association, and continued through the years at Mississippi State University and with the Starkville Chamber of Commerce. Above all else, Marilyn Thompson was a wife and mother, church member, volunteer, supporter of the arts, champion for many, and friend to all.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents and, in March of this year, by her husband, Warren. She is survived by her brother, Ben Burney of Crystal Springs, MS; daughter, Ruth Thompson-Klein (Mark) of Lopez Island, WA; daughter, Lydia Boutwell (Bill) of Meridian, MS; son, John Thompson (Suzanne) of Idaho Springs, CO; and daughter, Martha Underhill (Mark) of Mt. Juliet, TN. She was proud grandmother to Sarah Beth Boutwell, Beau Boutwell (Rachel), Slater Thompson, Marlee Thompson, Bradley Campbell, Austin Underhill, and great-grandmother to Parker Boutwell.
The Thompson family is grateful for the loving care provided to their mother by caregivers Ann Woodson, Chastity Pate, Paige Winfield, Katie Weeks, Christy Thompson, and Kristen Rushing, and by Sanctuary Hospice nurse Valerie Miller and staff.
Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018, 12:00 noon – 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church in Starkville. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m., with interment at Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Thompson’s grandsons and sons-in-law.
The family requests no flowers be sent, but instead donations can be given to the Missions Program of First United Methodist Church (200 W. Lampkin St., Starkville, 39759), to Christian
World Missions (P.O. Box 985, Starkville, MS 39760), to Mississippi’s Toughest Kids Foundation (P.O. Box 520, Crystal Springs, MS 39059), or to the charity of choice.
