Mary Sarah Ball Rackley
A visitation will be held for Mrs. Mary Sarah Ball Rackley Monday, February 18, 2019, 4:00-6:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, MS. Mrs. Rackley died on February 14, 2019 at Oktibbeha County Hospital. She was 99.
Born in Pontotoc in 1920, she was one of 9 children of Laurel Perry and Mary Stanford Ball. A graduate of Pontotoc High School, worked in Mobile and New Orleans supporting the WWII effort as a Rosie Riveter for Allied Aircraft. She and her husband Cecil settled in Starkville in 1953, starting their first business Rackley-Walker Equipment Company, later Starkville Tractor. In 1962, they started Rackley Oil, originally as Lion Oil jobbers (now Marathon), and was active in the business for over 50 years. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and the Grace Ruth Sunday School class. A long-time Girl Scout, Mrs. Rackley volunteered as the neighborhood cookie chairman for many years.
Mrs. Rackley is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil Rackley, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Survivors include her daughter Cecelia Rackley Cook (Jack) and son Perry Calloway Rackley (Michele) both of Starkville; sister Amy Lou Brasfield of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; grandchildren Jay Cook (Margaret), Cal Rackley (Laura), Will Rackley (Caitlin), and Mary Adele Rackley, all of Starkville, and Ross Rackley of Charleston, SC; and great-grandchildren Bailey Cook, Addison, James, and Anna Rackley, and Madeline and Bounds Rackley; and a host of nieces and nephews.
