Obit for Nell Crowe Dean
Nell was born on August 17, 1943, in Longview, Mississippi, and went to be with her Lord on January 26, 2021, at her home in Starkville, at the age of 77 after a long battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her kind spirit, her meticulous attention to detail and dedication to whatever task was at hand, and her wonderful attitude during her illness, as well as for her close walk with the Lord. She made a difference in every life she touched.

There will be a family visitation at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, Sunday, January 31, 2021 with the graveside service following at 2:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery in Choctaw County.

Nell attended Longview Elementary School from the first through eighth grades, was a 1961 graduate of Starkville High School and a 1964 graduate of Mississippi State University. She was employed by MSU for 34 years in various departments, including the College of Education, the office of Academic Vice President, and the President’s Office.

Before her retirement Nell was active in Starkville Business and Professional Women’s Club where she served on many committees including Scrapbook and Newsletter, and also served as Vice President and President. She enjoyed being involved in the Starkville community Theatre and served a term as Treasurer. Wherever she lived, Nell was active in a local church and she continued that practice when she and Byron moved to Starkville by becoming a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mattie Crowe. Her survivors include her husband of 22 years, Byron Dean, who was a wonderful caregiver during her illness. She is also survived by stepdaughter, Becky Dean, of Cleveland, MS, stepson Brian (Sydney) Dean of Fort Collins, CO, and two step grandchildren, Carly and Briley Dean of Fort Collins.

Memorials may be made to: Fellowship Baptist Church, 545 Frye Road, Starkville, MS 39759, or to The Baptist Children’s Village, P.O. Box 27, Clinton MS, 39060.

The family wishes to thank the Golden Triangle Cancer Center, Nurse Kayla Parker and Dr. Amber Borden for the kindness and care shown during Nell’s illness.
