Sheryl Smith  Askew
Sheryl Smith Askew died on January 30, 2022 at the age of 72 after an extended illness. Born on November 11, 1949 in Jackson, MS to PG and Jean Q. Smith, Sheryl moved in 1965 to Newton, MS where she graduated from Newton High School in 1968 and remained in close contact with her fellow high school classmates. She attended Mississippi State University and attained a BS, an MEd, and Educational Specialist degree in Elementary Education. Her teaching career was spent teaching 1st or 2nd grades in Kosciusko Elementary School, Starkville Overstreet Elementary, and Sudduth Elementary. After her retirement in 2002, Sheryl enjoyed traveling, quilting, and following MSU athletic teams. One of her greatest enjoyments in retirement was visiting her family in Texas, especially the grandchildren.

Sheryl was a lifelong Baptist. A former member of Jackson Ridgecrest Baptist and Newton First Baptist, Sheryl was currently a member of Starkville First Baptist where she especially enjoyed her membership in the Friendship Sunday School class and her close relationship with fellow class members.

Sheryl is preceded in death by her parents, PG and Jean Q. Smith.

She is survived by her husband Joe of 48 years; her son, Trey and his wife Shanna of Pilot Point, TX; her beloved grandchildren, Cameron (13) and Eli (7) of Pilot Point. She is also survived by her brother, Dan Smith of Grenada, MS and numerous other relatives.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS and on Thursday, February 3, 2022 from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Starkville, with the funeral service immediately following.
