I, like many others, have vivid memories of Mrs Hodges' math classes. I learned quite a bit about math, and I consider her one of my best teachers. I also learned quite a bit about leadership.
I substitute-taught for several years, and I lead youth ministry now. I have often wanted (badly wanted) Mrs Hodges' ability to walk into a room and command attention. It was really rather remarkable! We'd all be talking or whatever, she'd stand quietly at the front of the room, and within moments we'd turn around and pay attention. I never could figure out how she communicated that expectation - and I've never been able to replicate it.
Mrs Hodges got respect. She earned it. And her high expectations made you earn respect in return. I think that's great leadership.
Mrs Hodges, thank you for teaching me to live up to a standard, to not settle for second or third or fourth best, and to give respect. I value those lessons.
