Nellie Jean  Harned (Howell)
Nellie Jean Harned left this life on July 4, 2014 at the age of 86 and entered into the presence of her living Lord.

Mrs. Harned, was the former Nellie Jean Howell, was born in Starkville, Mississippi, on January 6, 1928. She attended the Starkville public schools, graduating from Starkville High School in 1945. She completed courses at MSU in secretarial skills and office management. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist Church. She will be remembered as an avid supporter of Girl Scouts of America and a skilled bridge player. She contributed much to the life of the Oktoc Community.

Mrs. Harned was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Maudine Nickels Howell of Starkville and Mr. James William Howell of San Angelo, Texas and two brothers, Mr. James William Howell, Jr. and Mr. Donald N. Howell, both of Starkville.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Mr. Horace H. Harned, Jr.; four children, Mrs. Margaret Ann Chandler of Starkville, Mrs. Helen Dillard and husband, Jim of Niceville, Florida, Mrs. Alice Walters and husband, Duane of Orlando, Florida and Mr. Horace H. Harned, III and wife, Song of Starkville; two brothers, Mr. Ronald N. Howell and wife, Margaret of Laurel and Dr. G. Leroy Howell and wife, Earline of Starkville; eight grandchildren and six great grand-children.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, July 7 from 5-7 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. The funeral service is Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Welch Funeral Home Chapel with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville. Reverend Blaine Allen will officiate.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to one of Mrs. Harned's favorite charities, The Jesus Film Project of Campus Crusade for Christ or Prison Fellowship.
