August 5,1917 - January 8, 2015

Charles North Moore, 97, of Starkville, Mississippi, passed peacefully from this life to the next on January 8, 2015, at Oktibbeha County Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Marion Cemetery, Marion, AL. The family will visit with friends following the Memorial Service.

C.N. Moore was born August 5,1917, in Marion, Alabama, the youngest of four children, to Mary North Moore (Raymond, MS), and Thomas Irving Moore, Sr. (Newborn, AL). In 1934 during the Great Depression he graduated from Perry County High School. He received his B.S. degree from Auburn University in 1940.

During WWII he served in the Pacific as a line officer with the amphibious branch of the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946. As 1st Lt of LST 275, CO of LCT 317, and CO of LST 713, he worked with the U.S. Marines during the initial invasions of Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

After the war he received an MBA from the University of Alabama in 1948, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1962. While at Michigan he met the love of his life, Dorothy Grace Renzema (Grand Rapids, MI), and they were married in 1952.

C.N. Moore served on the faculty of the University of Alabama from 1948 to 1962. There, during the 1950s he pioneered courses in electronic data processing. Dr. Moore joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 1963 and founded a new department, “Business Statistics and Data Processing”, in the College of Business and Industry. He developed the first accredited college degree program in the nation that led to careers in business related data processing using the computer (Business Information Systems). In the early 1970's he created and presented at international conferences, an innovative, interactive computerized simulation model for teaching statistics, SPATS (Statistical Program to Assist in Teaching Statistics). Dr. Moore retired from MSU in 1984 as Professor and Head Emeritus of “Business Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis”.

He then became a charter and life member of the MSU “Association of Retired Faculty” where he served as president, director, treasurer, and received the first ARF Exemplary Service Award. For the Starkville Chamber of Commerce, he served as chairman of the “Government Affairs Committee”, and the “Education Committee”. In that role, he created and directed the Starkville area “Education Hall of Fame”. For the Starkville Exchange Club, Dr. Moore served as president, and chaired the “Youth of the Month/Year” programs. He also was a member and officer of AARP, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He co-founded the local men's chorus, “Men for the Master”, served as a volunteer with "Meals on Wheels" for more than twenty years, and was a member and Sunday School teacher at Aldersgate United Methodist Church for over forty years.

Charles North Moore was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (T.I. Moore, Jr. and John C. Moore), one sister (Anne G. Padgett) and his dear wife (Dorothy Grace Renzema Moore). He is survived by his three children: Mary Grace Moore of Starkville, Charles Renzema Moore, also of Starkville, and Dorothy Johanne (Dora) Moore Ward (Jeff) of Chicago, IL; and three grandchildren: Kevin Moore Ward, Gregory North Ward, and Eric Charles Ward, all of Chicago, IL.
