Obituary for Fern Cobb

Fern Cobb
On February 5, 2015, Fern Cobb, also known as "Fern Mom" to family and close friends, went to her Heavenly Home to be with Jesus, the One she had been waiting to see her whole life. She was born in Mantee, Mississippi, on September 17, 1921, to James Andrew and Emma Mae Harden. She was the youngest of five children, following Velma (Harris), Roma (Ramey), Inez (Bailey), and James (Harden). She graduated from nursing school in Greenville, Mississippi. On October 11, 1942, Fern married Russell Cobb, a dashing flight instructor and they lived many places in the United States and also Japan while he served in the Air Force. Fern made friends all over the world where they were stationed; and in 1969, they moved back "home" by settling in Starkville.

They were lifelong MSU fans, following the Bulldogs, with Fern Mom especially enjoying MSU basketball. She loved being in a bible study of ladies who met weekly on Mondays for many years in her home. Her bible study teacher, Kay Verrall, became as dear to her as her family.

Fern was so proud of her sons, Rusty and Ron, and never got over the wonder of having grandchildren who called her "Fern Mom." She prayed daily for all of her family, calling them by name. Rusty and Judy's children are Kevin Cobb; Carter, Allison, Katie and Clara Cobb; Kendall and Brittain Cobb; Kelly, Tom, A.J. and Sophie Horner; Tiffany, Chris, Sam and Emily Grace Lane; and Melody Joy, Charlie, Arielle and Jazmyn Hattaway. Ron and Diane's family are Andy, Laura and Ty Cobb; and Kasey, Jon, Jack and Lucy Joy Shepherd. Fern loved her many nieces and nephews, and she and Russell especially enjoyed his sister, Dot Arguelles, when she visited them.

Fern and Russell made wonderful friends who also became family at First Baptist Church, Starkville. Because she had been a school nurse and worked with children
for many years, Russell suggested that in lieu of flowers, gifts to celebrate her life could be made to the First Baptist Church Children's Building Fund.

Fern and Russell have been blessed by many friends, neighbors, church members and medical caregivers. What she would want everyone to know is "I am now at Home!"

Visitation will be on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. The celebration of her life will follow at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Park.
