Dr. Mattie Mae Brown
Dr. Mattie Mae Brown, age 77, went to be with Jesus from the Golden Triangle Baptist Hospital in Columbus, MS on August 25, 2015. Visitation will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Starkville on Saturday, August 29 at 2 p.m. followed by the church service at 3 p.m. The service will be led by Dr. Grant Arinder. Burial be in LaPorte, Texas at a later date. She was born on May 28, 1938 to Pete and Eudie Brown.

May was a graduate of Mary Hardin Baylor College at Belton, Texas and earned her doctorate from Mississippi State. She worked with the Indian children in Phoenix, Arizona before coming to Mississippi and working for the Choctaw Tribal Schools in Philadelphia in several positions before retiring in the early 2000’s.

Though she never had children of her own, Mae loved all children, nieces, nephews, her school students, friends at church, and they loved her. She always had several one dollar bills in her pocket to share with them. Many were encouraged to learn scriptures or read books for special rewards.

Her church was the center of her life and her Sunday School class and Bible study group members were her sisters in Christ. She was faithful in attendance and support for every area of Calvary Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by all.

She is survived by Betty Tucker, a very dear friend of Starkville, one brother David Brown, one sister Inez Hendricks and husband Charles, all of Mena, Arkansas, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Eudie Brown, one brother, John Brown, and two sisters, Hazel Cummings and Dorothy Schuler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Mission Fund at 405 North Jackson Street, Starkville, MS 39759
