My Idol

I grew up in. Birmingham, Alabama, in a neighborhood surrounded by primarily Alabama fans. That didn't bother me because I thought my Maroons were bigger and better than anything the State of Alabama could produce. My dad would take me to State games all over and I collected autographs and pictures.of the players and kept them in a maroon leather portfolio. I would even write players. Art Davis answered me and sent me an autographed picture which was a mega prize in those days! I took it to school and became an immediate celebrity. I loved Art Davis ! After moving to Starkville I met another Art Davis who told me that once a furniture truck pulled up at his house to deliver new furniture...he said that he was tempted but told the driver that the furniture belonged to the other Art Davis. I should have known that Art was living in Starkville but, for some reason, I thought he was out west. My only regret is that I didn't know and make it a point to visit with him and perhaps do some painting with him.

Rest in peace, my friend...you will always be one of the greatest Bulldogs of all time,
