Obituary for David VanLandingham

David  VanLandingham
David VanLandingham died on February 2, 2022. He was born to JB VanLandingham, Jr and Joan Randall on December 31, 1943 in Iowa City, IA. His family returned to Starkville in 1946 and he attended Starkville High School where he met his future wife, Sherrie Reynolds. Upon graduating from SHS in 1962, he attended Sewanee University in Tennessee for a year before returning to Starkville to attend Mississippi State University as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1965, he and Sherrie were married.

In 1966, he graduated MSU and received a commission in the US Air Force. He completed Undergraduate Navigator Training and was assigned as a Navigator on KC-135 Stratotankers making multiple deployments overseas including operations in Vietnam. David spent his final years in the Air Force as an Instructor Navigator.

After his military service, David returned to Starkville in 1973 and worked at VanLandingham Lumber Company until 1996 when he took over operations until his retirement in 2007.

David volunteered countless hours to serve the community he loved as a member of the Board of Directors for the Oktibbeha County Economic Development Authority, Starkville Area Chamber of Commerce including as the President from 1985 to 1986 and as a member of the Rotary Club for many years serving as President in 1988 to 1989. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Oktibbeha County Humane Society from 2007 to 2020 and served as president in 2012.

David was a long time member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection where he served in many roles and on many committees and boards, including Junior Warden, Senior Warden and several years with Cursillo.

He is survived by his wife, Sherrie, two sisters, Linda Eggbeer and Martha VanLandingham, two children Christie, Steve (wife Wendy) and four grandchildren, Hadley, Vincent, Brett and Orion.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection on February 12, 2022. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am. Please wear your mask. The service will also be streamed on “ECRstarkville.com/live”
