Obituary for Dr. Thomas Hughes Handy

Dr. Thomas Hughes  Handy
Thomas Hughes Handy, 91, of Starkville, MS, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet Milam Handy and his two children. Kim Douglas Handy (Deb) of Knoxville, TN, Dana Handy Sharbrough (William) of Charleston SC, three grandchildren, Matthew Edward Sharbrough of Starkville, MS, Dr. Kathryn S. Bass (Jeremiah)of Starkville, MS, Geoffrey Christopher Sharbrough (Kelly) of Charleston, SC one great grandchild Natalie Ann Sharbrough of Charleston SC.

The funeral will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2013 with visitation at the church from 1:00-2:00. The burial will be at Evergreen
Cemetery in Ocean Springs, MS on Friday December 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Handy was born in Biloxi, MS on May 26, 1922 to Ellis and Jean More Handy. He grew up in
Ocean Springs, MS and had wonderful stories about his adventures in growing up there. He graduated
from Mississippi State University in 1943 with a B.S. In physics with minors in math and chemistry. He served as an antiaircraft artillery officer during World War II seeing action in England, France, Belgium and Germany. While awaiting transportation home in the Fall of 1945, he took courses in political Science at London University School of Economics and Political Science.

During the decade following World War II, he spent alternating periods of time teaching physical science courses (math, physics and chemistry) in various schools and taking graduate courses in political science at several universities. He taught courses at Ocean Springs High School; Biloxi High School; St. Stephens (Austin, TX), Keesler Air Force Base; Meridian Naval Air Training Station and MS Valley State College. He attended the University of Chicago, The University of MS and the University of Texas where he earned his Ph.D.

In 1956, Dr. Handy moved to Starkville, MS where he started teaching at MSU in the Department of
Political Science. He taught there until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection where he served as lay reader. He and Jan spent their retirement supporting the restoration of the Ocean Springs High School as the Mary O'Keefe Art Center and the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs. He enjoyed working in his workshop and entertaining his grandchildren as they grew up.

Memorial donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 105 Montgomery Hill Rd, Starkville, MS, The Mary O'Keefe Art Center, Walter Anderson Museum or to the charity of choice.
