Obituary for John Stuart "Johnny" Moore

John Stuart "Johnny" Moore
On Thursday, August 30, 2018, John Stuart “Johnny” Moore, loving husband and father of four children, passed away at the age of 58. Johnny was born on June 1, 1960 in Columbus, Mississippi to John Paul and Evelyn (Jackson) Moore. A lifelong resident of Starkville, Johnny graduated from Starkville Academy in 1978 and next earned his Bachelor of Professional Accountancy degree from Mississippi State University in 1982.

After graduation, Johnny followed in his father’s footsteps and attended the University of Mississippi School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate in December 1984. Johnny was admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 1985 and began practicing law with his father in Starkville. Together, they represented thousands of clients from Oktibbeha County and beyond at Moore Law Office on Lafayette Street in downtown Starkville. In his more than 30 years as an attorney, Johnny primarily practiced real estate and probate law. He took special pride in representing the most vulnerable citizens of Oktibbeha County as the Board of Supervisors-appointed attorney for clients facing civil commitment due to alcohol and drug dependency, as well as mental illness. His diligence as an advocate and his care and attention to detail made him an invaluable resource to individuals throughout the area.

On August 7, 1982, Johnny married the love of his life, Karen Johnson. Together, they raised four boys: Daniel Brent, Bradley Stuart, Bryce Denton and David Alexander. Johnny also had one grandchild—John Parker with another to arrive shortly, Marlee.

Johnny was a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, as well as the Oktibbeha County Bar Association. Johnny had a passion for helping others, including mentoring numerous children from the Palmer Home and in the Starkville community with his wife, Karen. Johnny also coached Little League baseball for more than 10 years, and served on the Board of Directors for the Starkville Little League Baseball Association. Johnny and Karen have been supporters for many years to Palmer Home, Starkville Pregnancy Care Center, Starkville Habitat for Humanity, and the American Cancer Society.

Johnny served on the Starkville Academy Board of Directors for several years, including time spent as both the President and as Chairman of the Capital Campaign. Johnny was twice elected as a Mississippi delegate to the Modern Woodmen of America’s National Delegation where he served as chairman of the Committee on the Agenda, as well as chairman on the By-Laws Committee.

Johnny enjoyed travelling with his wife, cheering for Mississippi State and the Green Bay Packers, and spending time at his farm on Pike Road. During quiet moments, Johnny could often be found admiring pictures of his grandson or his many cows.

Johnny was preceded in death by his father, John Paul and his brother Scott. He is survived by his mother Evelyn (Jackson) Moore, his wife Karen, and his four sons Brent, Brad and his wife Jessica, Bryce and David, as well as his grandson John Parker and a granddaughter to arrive soon, Marlee. Johnny is also survived by his brother and sister, Bruce Moore of Starkville, and Teresa Ann Staples of Oklahoma. Johnny has many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him greatly.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Starkville. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., to be followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Johnny’s family asks for donations to Palmer Home in lieu of flowers. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Gardens on Oktoc Road in Starkville.
