Condolence From: George Pope
Condolence: Dr. Scott (“It’s Roy when it is just the two of us.”) was my masters dissertation advisor in 1962-63; a long time ago when we we both young. Although my academic career ended with my Masters degree, the lessons, advice, consul, and friendship I had with Roy served me well in what turned out to be a successful diplomatic career with six Embassy postings covering the Aggie economic situation of the countries/regions to which I was posted.

A ‘story’ you might find amusing—In 1963, when I defended my master’s dissertation, on the roll of railroads in the agricultural economic history of Mississippi, (no surprise there) the first question I fielded, from one of the ‘old guard’ history professors was, “Why should anyone be interested in the subject you selected?”

Roy, who had selected the subject, put his hand on my arm and said something like, “I’ll handle this one George.”

For the next 90 minutes I sat silently while Roy and the ‘old guard’ debated everything but my dissertation.

When we walked out of the room, Roy said something like, “That went well.”

“But, but, but…” I stuttered.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “I got the rest of the department supporting your dissertation.”

I think it was that moment when I realized an academic career wasn’t for me.

Anyway, he helped shape my life for which I am eternally grateful.

Condolences, and happy memories.

George Pope

Condolence: Please know that our thoughts are with you. If we can help in any way please let us know.

I worked with your father those many years. We had adjacent offices. He and I traveled to a couple of conventions together. I enjoyed his company. He had many stories to tell. After your mother's passing, when we went walking and saw him on the porch with his cigar, we would occasionally stop and visit. We shall miss him in the neighborhood.
