Horace H. Harned, Jr. was a hateful racist and staunch segregationist whose cruelty left deep wounds in his community and his nation. He was a member of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, a state-sanctioned terrorist organization that opposed fairness and equality. Harned's role in violence, oppression, imprisonment, and murder of peaceful civil rights workers was never punished during his lifetime, but history will remember him for his crimes against humanity. The world became a meaner and more unjust place because of Horace H. Harned, Jr., and his death gives survivors a reminder of the evil we face as we strive for peace and justice.
