Monroe Wilson Dewberry
July 31, 1937 – April 7, 2020

Monroe Wilson Dewberry, 82, died April 7, 2020 at North MS Medical Center in Eupora, MS. Monroe was born at home on July 31, 1937 in Maben, MS to Arthur Wesley Dewberry and Ellen Burkes Dewberry.

Monroe graduated from Maben High School and attended Mississippi State University. He worked in the MSU Business Office for 30 years and was Bursar when he retired in 1991. While working for the University he helped with the annual Miss Mississippi State pageant each year as accountant for the pageant. He was often asked to judge other Miss America Preliminary pageants across the state.

He was an active member of the Starkville Community Theater for years and helped build sets, served on the board, and later began to act and direct in SCT plays. After retiring he moved to Tucson, AZ and was active in community theater there as well.

Monroe never met a stranger, and made friends wherever he was. He loved his family and was very proud of his sons, but his grandchildren were the loves of his life. His choice of clothing in his later years was not your typical granddaddy attire, but with his grandiose style, it seemed to suit his personality.

The family would like to thank his doctors and caregivers at Brooklyn Hall Personal Care Home (Mathiston, MS) and NMMC Hospice. They would also like to thank family members Glenda Kim and Lynn Dewberry for helping with his care over the last several years.

Monroe is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ellen Dewberry, his wife, Elizabeth McCaleb Dewberry, brother Arthur (Nancy) Dewberry, and sisters Louise (Erskin) Fulgham and Betty (Billy) Wilson.
He is survived by sons Derek (Terry) Dewberry of Coppell, TX, Mark (Jeanie) Dewberry of Helena, AL, Todd (Stacy) Dewberry of Maben, MS and Steven (Suzanne) Dewberry of Starkville, MS. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Malcom Dewberry, Liam Dewberry, Kelsey Dewberry, Dalton Dewberry, Bailey Dewberry, Carson Dewberry, Vance Dewberry, Caroline Dewberry and Shannon Dewberry. He is also survived by his former wife, Suzanne Simmons Dressel.

The family will have a private graveside service and will host a celebration of life at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Starkville Community Theatre or the charity of your choice.
